Welcome to your weekly dose of radical curiosity. Each [Monday or whenever it’s released], Civil Discord critiques the critics and tackles the top lines in news and society. Beginning with the premise that the ‘smallest common denominator’ of self-ownership is the greatest single driver of political, social, and cultural change, your intrepid co-hosts and colorful guests break down what individuals, communities, businesses, and finally institutions can do to find their footing, combat totalitarianism, and make their voices heard, wherever they stand on the issues. If you’re ideologically homeless, culturally tribeless, or tired of hearing the same rants about what’s not working, Civil Discord offers provocative counterpoints and fresh perspectives to keep you in the know, arm you with the arguments, and empower you to create the change you crave.

Episode 55: Forever a Loan
Thursday Sep 01, 2022
Thursday Sep 01, 2022
Today’s big story is, of course, President Biden’s student loan forgiveness proposal. We discuss the constitutionality, consequences, and conflicted feelings that libertarian-leaning recipients of unsolicited federal aid can experience—plus, what to do with them (and the extra money). Then the CDC admits to being wrong about natural immunity and decides to get more bureaucratic in order to make itself less bureaucratic. Experts say additional staff, task forces, and taxpayer dollars are needed (seriously). Give it a listen and let’s get fiscal!

Episode 54: Attacking the Cracks in the Alphabet Soup State
Thursday Aug 25, 2022
Thursday Aug 25, 2022
…That was REALLY supposed to be a play on “Animal Crackers in My Soup,” and then we fired our title-writing summer intern. Today we discuss the right and left’s reactions to the raid on Trump’s Florida estate and what it means that both parties are taking aim at Americans’ faith in our institutions—from a place of bad faith. How much, or what kind of, institutional distrust is a good thing? What’s the distinction between low faith and low trust? How should and shouldn’t we question the legitimacy of our government and government actors? We also pick apart the environmental provisions of the IRA Reduction Act and find that its eco-friendly promises are a lot of hot air. Finally, two more alphabet soup institutions lose two legendary actors: Dr. Science departs the CDCP; and Brian Stelter is ousted from CNN! We discuss.

Episode 53: The IRA vs. Your IRA, Chekhovian Guns Only, and Props for Pelosi
Thursday Aug 04, 2022
Thursday Aug 04, 2022
Maurice just woke up from a nap and Amanda forgot to do the pre-show notes. Still, the podcast soldiers on with a LIVE pre-show that includes the hosts’ controversial opinions on national anthems, public school starting hours, and possibly Canada. But we get into some real news content: The Inflation Reduction Act that isn’t, Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan that almost wasn’t, and a semi-automatic weapon ban that Maurice just can’t even begin to can. Plus, Maurice revisits his views on voting and explains how they’ve evolved.

This week, we catch up on stories breaking, broken, and mostly unspoken. First, a good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun! Next, the White House can’t stop a recession—even if they try to redefine what the word means. Then, President Biden plays footsie with the idea of declaring a… climate emergency? We discuss policy changes that would genuinely help the environment (yes, there are things the government can do!). We also check in on a story about European farmers rebelling against environmental regulations and celebrate Democrats’ plan to own the cons by following the Constitution.

Episode 51: Checks, Drugs, and Good-Haired Trolls
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
Remember when we joked about needing inflation stimulus checks to fight inflation? Well, Gavin with the Good Hair took us seriously! Seriously. We discuss. Speaking of which—GwtGH just bought ad space in Florida to go head-to-head with Ron DeSantis! We discuss the major party prospects for 2024 and offer our own picks for Republican and Democratic candidates. Finally, in a segment honorifically titled “JoeR is Dumb,” we provide a progress report on Oregon’s total drug decriminalization experiment. What do the results say about the libertarian stance on drug legalization?

Episode 50: When Your Gun Has More Rights Than Your Nicotine
Thursday Jun 30, 2022
Thursday Jun 30, 2022
In a one-two policy punch that couldn’t be more perfect for big tobacco, the Biden administration moves to restrict nicotine levels in cigarettes while the FDA pursues a ban on Juul vapes. Next, SCOTUS upholds the right to concealed carry in all 50 states while the Senate passes a bipartisan gun bill that probably wouldn’t have stopped any of our most recent or deadly mass shootings. Finally, the Federal Reserve just might get a brand new mandate—with more to come.

Episode 49: Hyperstagflation, Unreliable Sources
Thursday Jun 23, 2022
Thursday Jun 23, 2022
After a special announcement, we unearth a buried story from this past weekend: The WHO’s director general has apparently leaked his own thoughts on the ‘lab leak theory’. Next, we turn to all things inflation. How bad is it? What comes next? What will (and won’t) help? Finally, trad media is still broken as USA Today retracts 23 stories written by a reporter who allegedly fabricated sources.
